Places to know
Eight to ten stops, with the neighborhood and why you would go. Hours and ticket prices change, so check them before you queue.
Nature
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
The park of sandstone pillars. It is a landscape, not a single lookout. You will ride park transport inside it.
Nature
Golden Whip Stream
The valley walk under the pillars. The flat way to see the park if you would rather hike than ride up first.
Viewpoint
Tianzi Mountain
A high area of lookouts over the pillars. Often paired with Yuanjiajie on the same park day.
Viewpoint
Yuanjiajie
The cluster of peaks many people recognize from films. It is inside the national park.
Nature
Ten-Mile Gallery
A valley of smaller peaks. A different angle if you already did the high lookouts.
Nature
Huanglong Cave
A large cave near the park town. An indoor break, not the reason to come.
Nature
Baofeng Lake
A lake among the peaks, outside the main park gate. Add it only if you have a spare half day.
Nature
Tianmen Mountain
The mountain by the city, with a long stair and a natural arch. It is not inside the national forest park.
Day trip
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon
A separate canyon east of the park town, known for a glass-bottom bridge. It is its own ticket and its own half day.
Neighborhood
Wulingyuan
The town at the park gates. Stay here if your two park days matter more than city nightlife.
Three days
A sample, not a booking. Each day stays in one part of town. Move a stop if you are tired.
Day 1
Into the park
One gate, one area. Do not try to see every named peak.
- MorningWulingyuan
Start from the park town, not from a city hotel, if you can.
- MorningGolden Whip Stream
Walk the stream if you want the valley first.
- AfternoonZhangjiajie National Forest Park
Use the park buses. Distances inside are longer than the map suggests.
Day 2
The high peaks
Tianzi and Yuanjiajie. Leave the cave for a rainy hour, not the main plan.
- MorningYuanjiajie
The familiar pillars. Go while you are fresh.
- AfternoonTianzi Mountain
Lookouts over the same landscape from another rim.
- AfternoonTen-Mile Gallery
Add the gallery only if you still have legs and daylight.
Day 3
Tianmen, by the city
A different mountain. Do not schedule it before a park dawn.
- MorningTianmen Mountain
The city-side mountain. Cableway and stairs are the usual way up and down. Check the day before that it is open.
- EveningHuanglong Cave
Skip unless you are back near Wulingyuan and want to be indoors. It does not belong after a tired Tianmen day unless you are already next to it.
Getting around
Zhangjiajie does not have a metro. The national forest park is in Wulingyuan. Tianmen Mountain is by the city in Yongding. Treat them as different bases. Buses, taxis, and DiDi link the city and Wulingyuan.
Inside the national park, shuttle buses connect the areas, and cableways do the steep parts. Follow the park's own signs for which bus goes where. Amap helps outside the gates more than on the trails.
The Grand Canyon and its glass bridge are another site, east of Wulingyuan. Leave them off this three-day plan unless you drop something else.
Food to try
The area is home to Tujia and Miao cooking. Smoked and cured pork, mountain vegetables, and simple rice meals are what you will actually see on menus.
Eat a proper meal in Wulingyuan before a park day and carry snacks. Park restaurants exist, but you do not want them to be the plan.
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn are when the pillars are easier to see and the walking is kinder. Summers are humid and busy. In winter, fog and mist often hide the view that you came for, even when the trails are open.
Check whether cableways are running. Weather closes them. That is a reason to keep a valley walk as a backup.
