Old factory buildings turned into cafes, shops, and galleries.

The Shekou waterfront around a retired ship. An easy evening in the west of the city.

A large garden against the hills. A half day if you want green instead of another mall.

Dameisha
A beach on the east side of the city. Go only if you want the water. It is not a downtown stop.
Three days
A sample, not a booking. Each day stays in one part of town. Move a stop if you are tired.
Day 1
Futian
The civic center is one neighborhood. Do not cross the whole city after it.

Walk up while it is cooler.

The lawns are the sight. You are done faster than you think.
- AfternoonShenzhen Museum
Air conditioning and the story of the city.
- EveningDongmen
Cross to Luohu for a louder, older shopping street and dinner.
Day 2
Nanshan and Shekou
Parks in the west, then the waterfront.

Shekou for dinner by the water.
Day 3
A looser day

The garden if you want hills and plants.
- AfternoonDameisha
Swap the garden for the beach only if you are happy to spend the ride out east.
- EveningDongmen
A second pass if lunch out east ran late and you want an easy dinner back in town.
Getting around
Shenzhen has a metro. Use Alipay or WeChat for a ride code, and Amap for which exit to use. The city is wide. Futian, Nanshan, and Luohu are different days.
DiDi is the fallback when the metro exit is far from the park gate, and for Shekou in the evening.
Hong Kong is the city next door. It is not on this itinerary, and a mainland China plan does not cover it. Valid in mainland China (not Hong Kong or Macau).
Food to try
Cantonese food is the local base: dim sum, roast meats, and seafood. The city also cooks in the styles of people who moved here from everywhere else in China, so a "Shenzhen meal" can mean a dozen things.
Eat dim sum in the late morning. Eat seafood by the coast only on the day you are already in Yantian or Shekou.
Best time to visit
Late autumn and winter are milder. Summers are hot and humid, and typhoon season is a real planning issue on the south coast. Check the forecast before a beach day.
Parks are the main outdoor sights. Go when you can walk at midday.
Stay connected
A stable, hassle-free connection, where your apps work like they do back home.* Maps, DiDi, and payments all need data the moment you land.
- Alipay. Pay in shops and taxis, and open transit codes. Set it up before you fly.
- WeChat. Messages and pay. Most people in China use it.
- Amap. Transit and walking directions. Save the hotel address in Chinese.
- DiDi. Ride hailing. It also opens inside Alipay and WeChat.
- Trip.com. Trains and hotels, alongside the official 12306 app.
