Three days

A sample, not a booking. Each day stays in one part of town. Move a stop if you are tired.

Day 1

Liwan

Old streets on the west side. Stay there for dinner.

  1. Morning
    Shamian Island沙面Liwan

A slow walk under the trees before the day heats up.

  2. Morning
    Sacred Heart Cathedral石室圣心大教堂Yuexiu

A few minutes from the island if the church is open to visitors.

  3. Afternoon
    Chen Clan Ancestral Hall陈家祠Liwan

The carving rewards a proper look, not a sprint.

  4. Evening
    Shangxiajiu上下九Liwan

Snacks on the pedestrian street. Dim sum earlier in the day is even better if you can face a queue.

Day 2

Yuexiu

Park, old streets, and the river after dark.

  1. Morning
    Yuexiu Park越秀公园Yuexiu

Walk up for the view, then back down before it is too hot.

  2. Afternoon
Temple of the Six Banyan Trees六榕寺Yuexiu

A short temple stop in the old center.

  3. Afternoon
    Beijing Road北京路Yuexiu

The glassed-over ancient road is the interesting bit.

  4. Evening
    Pearl River珠江Yuexiu and Haizhu

Walk the bank. A boat is optional.

Day 3

Dim sum and the south bank

Eat first. The tower can wait.

  1. Morning
    Yongqing Fang永庆坊Liwan

Lanes, then a proper dim sum sitting if you did not do one yesterday.

  2. Afternoon
    Canton Tower广州塔Haizhu

Cross the river. Look at the tower from the park if you would rather not go up.

  3. Evening
    Pearl River珠江Yuexiu and Haizhu

One more look at the lights from whichever bank you are on.

Getting around

Guangzhou has a metro, and the city publishes English standards for metro signs, so station names and directions are written to be read in English as well as Chinese. Use Alipay or WeChat for a ride code.

DiDi covers the trips that cross the river awkwardly or run after the metro winds down. Shamian, Liwan, and Yuexiu are the walkable clusters. Haizhu and the tower are a separate ride.

The city is hot for much of the year. Plan indoor food breaks in the middle of the day.

Food to try

Dim sum (yum cha) is the meal to organize a morning around. Look for har gow, siu mai, rice noodle rolls, and egg tarts. Roast goose and char siu show up at the same tables later in the day.

Shangxiajiu is for grazing. A sit-down dim sum house is the better version of the same cuisine.

Best time to visit

Autumn and winter are the easier months. Summers are hot, humid, and often rainy. Spring can be muggy too.

The food calendar does not close. Go when you can walk outside at lunchtime.

Stay connected

A stable, hassle-free connection, where your apps work like they do back home.* Maps, DiDi, and payments all need data the moment you land.

  • Alipay. Pay in shops and taxis, and open transit codes. Set it up before you fly.
  • WeChat. Messages and pay. Most people in China use it.
  • Amap. Transit and walking directions. Save the hotel address in Chinese.
  • DiDi. Ride hailing. It also opens inside Alipay and WeChat.
  • Trip.com. Trains and hotels, alongside the official 12306 app.
