Three days

A sample, not a booking. Each day stays in one part of town. Move a stop if you are tired.

Day 1

Pandas, then tea

The base is across town. Do it first and keep the rest of the day soft.

  1. Morning
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding成都大熊猫繁育研究基地Chenghua

Arrive early. Afternoons are hotter and the pandas rest more.

  2. Afternoon
    People's Park人民公园Qingyang

A teahouse chair is the right recovery.

  3. Evening
    Kuanzhai Alley宽窄巷子Qingyang

Walk the lanes and eat nearby. You do not need to shop.

Day 2

Wuhou and the west

Temples and gardens on the south and west sides.

  1. Morning
    Wuhou Shrine武侯祠Wuhou

See the shrine before Jinli gets loud.

  2. Afternoon
    Jinli锦里Wuhou

    Snacks, then move on.

Gardens if you want a quieter hour. Skip it if the morning ran long.

  4. Evening
    Wenshu Monastery文殊院Qingyang

The monastery quarter is an easy place for a meatless dinner.

Day 3

Downtown and hotpot

Leave the schedule loose. Chengdu rewards that.

  1. Afternoon
    Chunxi Road春熙路Jinjiang

Wander, or sit in a cafe and plan dinner.

  2. Evening
    Anshun Bridge安顺廊桥Jinjiang

River walk, then hotpot. Tell the kitchen how spicy you actually want it.

Getting around

Chengdu has a metro. Station names appear in Chinese and English or pinyin. Use Alipay or WeChat for a ride code, and Amap when a transfer is confusing.

DiDi is the simple option to the panda base and back, especially if you are leaving early. The base is in Chenghua, not downtown.

Dujiangyan is a real day trip. Do not staple it onto the panda morning.

Food to try

Hotpot is the meal people come for. Chengdu hotpot is numbing as well as hot. Mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, and Zhong dumplings are the daytime classics.

Teahouses are not a tourist show. Order tea, sit, and stay a while. That is ordinary Chengdu.

Best time to visit

The city is mild for much of the year and often cloudy, because it sits in a basin. Summers are warm and humid. Winters are cool rather than severe.

Spring and autumn are the easiest if you want to walk all day. Pandas do not care which month you pick.

Stay connected

A stable, hassle-free connection, where your apps work like they do back home.* Maps, DiDi, and payments all need data the moment you land.

  • Alipay. Pay in shops and taxis, and open transit codes. Set it up before you fly.
  • WeChat. Messages and pay. Most people in China use it.
  • Amap. Transit and walking directions. Save the hotel address in Chinese.
  • DiDi. Ride hailing. It also opens inside Alipay and WeChat.
  • Trip.com. Trains and hotels, alongside the official 12306 app.
