Chongqing travel guide.

Chongqing is a hill city between two rivers. The views are the point, and so is the hotpot. This guide keeps each day in one part of town.

Places to know

Eight to ten stops, with the neighborhood and why you would go. Hours and ticket prices change, so check them before you queue.

Neighborhood

Jiefangbei

解放碑Yuzhong

The pedestrian center of the peninsula. A useful base for walking to the viewpoints.

Landmark

Hongyadong

洪崖洞Yuzhong

The stacked riverside buildings you have seen in photos. Go for the view, then eat somewhere calmer.

Viewpoint

Chaotianmen

朝天门Yuzhong

The tip of the peninsula where the Yangtze and Jialing meet.

Landmark

Liziba

李子坝Yuzhong

The station where a rail line passes through a residential building. A short, specific stop.

Viewpoint

Eling Park

鹅岭公园Yuzhong

A hill park with a long view over the peninsula. Quieter than Hongyadong.

Viewpoint

Yangtze River Cableway

长江索道Yuzhong to Nan'an

The gondola across the Yangtze. Ride it for the river, not as transport you depend on.

Museum

Three Gorges Museum

重庆中国三峡博物馆Yuzhong

The city museum beside People's Square, for the river history and a break from stairs.

Temple

Luohan Temple

罗汉寺Yuzhong

A temple tucked into the downtown peninsula, easy to add while you are already walking.

Neighborhood

Ciqikou

磁器口Shapingba

An old riverside town on the Jialing, now a snack street. Go earlier in the day.

Viewpoint

Nanshan

南山一棵树Nan'an

A south-bank lookout back at the peninsula. One night view is enough. Pick this or Hongyadong, or do both on different nights.

Three days

A sample, not a booking. Each day stays in one part of town. Move a stop if you are tired.

Day 1

The peninsula

Yuzhong on foot, with stairs. Wear shoes you trust.

  1. Morning
    Jiefangbei解放碑Yuzhong

Start in the pedestrian center so you learn the map.

  2. Morning
    Luohan Temple罗汉寺Yuzhong

A short temple stop while you are downtown.

  3. Afternoon
    Chaotianmen朝天门Yuzhong

    Walk out to the rivers.

  4. Evening
    Hongyadong洪崖洞Yuzhong

See it lit. Eat hotpot somewhere you can sit, not only in the most photographed building.

Day 2

Hills and the cableway

Views from above, then across the river.

  1. Morning
    Liziba李子坝Yuzhong

Time it so you actually see a train. Then move on.

  2. Morning
    Eling Park鹅岭公园Yuzhong

The park view is the better version of a skyline photo.

  3. Afternoon
    Three Gorges Museum重庆中国三峡博物馆Yuzhong

A seated hour if the hills were enough.

  4. Evening
    Yangtze River Cableway长江索道Yuzhong to Nan'an

Cross the Yangtze if the line is running and the wait looks sane.

Day 3

Ciqikou

Leave the peninsula. One old street is the day.

  1. Morning
    Ciqikou磁器口Shapingba

Arrive before the snack street is shoulder to shoulder.

  2. Evening
    Nanshan南山一棵树Nan'an

A south-bank night view if you still want one more look at the city.

Getting around

Chongqing has rail transit, including lines that climb between river and hill. A station on the map can be a long stair or escalator away from the street you want. Check the exit in Amap.

DiDi is worth it when two "nearby" places are on different levels. Liziba, Eling, and Hongyadong are not one flat walk.

Ciqikou is in Shapingba, on the Jialing, not on the Yuzhong peninsula. Give it its own half day.

Food to try

Chongqing hotpot is the meal. It is known for a hotter, oilier pot than the Chengdu version, often with a well of chili in the middle. Xiaomian (spicy small noodles) is the bowl you eat the next day.

Tell the restaurant your spice limit before the pot arrives. "Medium" is not a promise.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are easier. Summers are famously hot and humid. Winters are cool and damp, and the hills are slippery in the rain.

Night views work in any season. The walking is what the weather changes.

Stay connected

A stable, hassle-free connection, where your apps work like they do back home.* Maps, DiDi, and payments all need data the moment you land.

  • Alipay. Pay in shops and taxis, and open transit codes. Set it up before you fly.
  • WeChat. Messages and pay. Most people in China use it.
  • Amap. Transit and walking directions. Save the hotel address in Chinese.
  • DiDi. Ride hailing. It also opens inside Alipay and WeChat.
  • Trip.com. Trains and hotels, alongside the official 12306 app.
